Chapter 6

As if I crawled from a deep slumber, the dreams still real around me, I blinked suddenly sane eyes and looked around, panting in exhaustion and aching in every limb. My fingers and knuckles screamed in pain, and so did my side where, when I looked down, I spotted a deep gouge torn through the flesh, leaking blood all down my thigh and I staggered as something heavy and wiggling on my shoulders threw me off balance.

“Get your damn hands off me!”

Staggering to the side, I dropped Heather, who fell onto her hip with an ‘Oof!’ and threw me an annoyed grimace as she rubbed her hip.

“It’s you!” She said with pleasant surprise, “Wait… the Agency didn’t send someone?”

“Don’t you work for the Bureau?” I asked, confused and trembling as memories of what I’d just done came back to me and I looked down to see my body covered in dark red blood and little bits of white flesh that made my stomach roil.

“We have to get the fuck out of he-.” The woman’s voice was drowned out by the most blood-curdling howl of rage I’d ever heard. Her eye flashed wide, scent registering naked fear, and I realized that was my own scent as well.

The scream came from four floors above us, the only thing that gave me comfort as we raced down to the Buick. Heather ran barefoot, wearing a bloody hospital gown and bare ass flashing in the morning sun. I outpaced the woman and fired up the car, throwing it in reverse and popping open the passenger door. Before I could push the door open the woman dove through the backseat window, incredibly, rolling, coming up into a perfect seated position. Her eyes wide as she stared at me in the rear-view mirror.

“Go!” She shouted and I wanted to tell her we were fine. There weren’t even any guards outside.

Right at that moment a figure threw himself out of a fourth-floor window and flew in a graceful arc towards the concrete below, gold glittering at his neck and hands. I watched in awe as the man hit the ground in a crouch, muscles flexing and unharmed.

The Director’s head flashed up and those cold blue eyes met mine and I saw nothing human in him. Slamming on the gas I turned hard for the lot’s exit, wincing as the Buick slammed over a curb and rattled down the grassy hill to the curving road below.

“What the fuck are… you… god damn!”

Heather was thrown up into the ceiling as the back end popped up over the curb, then as we trundled down the grassy slope, over the road below, another curb and then down a steeper hillside. In between her flailing arms and legs, I could see flashes of movement behind us as the pursuit closed in and a deep terror awoke in my breast of what might happen if that man caught me.

There was no doubt in my mind, in my soul, or in a single cell of my body that the Director was a superior being.
